Workshop Sessions

Reach All Your Students - No Matter Where They're Starting

• Kerry Foley, Manager of Course Design
• Sara Makiya, Course Designer

One of the challenges of teaching at Extension is that we have students with a wide variety of backgrounds: some who are already experts in the subject and others who are brand new or have been out of school for years. In this session we'll share tips and strategies for designing assignments and selecting resources that can work for a broad range of students.

Student Success with Improved Feedback

• Joanna Do, Instructional Technologist, Canvas course site Designer
• Cortney Leigh Cox, Instructional Technologist

Students learn best with clear goals and understanding of expectations. Find out how to better leverage Canvas grading tools to communicate learning objectives and provide meaningful feedback with rubrics and Canvas annotations.

International Student Panel

Student Panelists:
• Guilherme Baggio Zuanazzi, Data Science
• Jia Yi Xu (Mario), Management
•April Fong, International Relations
Moderated by:  Adrienne Phelps-Coco, Executive Director of Teaching & Learning, DCE

In this event, a panel of international Harvard Extension School students will share class practices that worked for them and their learning. Panelists will discuss their experiences as students at Harvard Extension and tips for instructors on practices they can implement in their own classes.

Beyond Proctored Exams

Presenter: Ethan Contini-Field, M.ED

Running a "traditional" exam online with proctoring software can get complicated. In this workshop, you'll learn how to create exams for safeguards for academic integrity without a proctor. And because exams aren't the only way for students to show all they've learned, we'll showcase some common alternatives to exams.

Inclusive Teaching Tools & Strategies for Online Learning

• Karina Lin-Murphy, Manager of Faculty Development
• Zahra Ahmed, Faculty Development Specialist

We will draw on principles of inclusive teaching to offer ways you can establish a sense of belonging in your classroom and help your students feel seen and heard. Participants will be invited to survey and workshop their syllabus and coursework with peers.

Managing a Class with On-Demand Students

• Panelists:  Graeme Bird, Rob Munger, David Heitmeyer
• Moderated by:  Susan Goldstein, Online Education Web Conference Consultant

In this event, a panel of instructors and teaching assistants who teach flexible attendance classes share their own best practices in supporting all of their students. Panelists will discuss their experiences managing class activities, answering student questions, and moderating discussions for students no matter how they attend class.
